Reigning European champion Niina Petrokina withdrew from her planned Grand Prix events after Achilles surgery, aiming to return at the Tallinn Challenger at the end of November. Here’s a translation of an article and comments posted on ERR.

Although reigning European champion Niina Petrokina initially hoped to make her post-surgery comeback at Grand Prix event in Finland, her name has been removed from the entry list.

Petrokina was scheduled to compete in two Grand Prix events this season, but first withdrew from the France event and then withdrew from the Finland event. However, she is still registered for the Challenger event to be held in Tallinn at the end of November.

“We are very hopeful that we’ll compete here in Tallinn at the end of November. At least, that’s the goal. The Helsinki GP is a week earlier. We’re trying to do everything we can,” Petrokina’s coach Svetlana Varnavskaja told ERR at the end of October. “Right now, it’s hard to predict exactly how she’ll be able to train and what load she can handle. She is in very good physical and mental shape, and I’ll say again, the desire is strong, but we really mustn’t rush things.”

After months of pain in her right leg, Petrokina underwent Achilles tendon surgery in Germany at the beginning of October. During the operation, the inflamed tendon sheath restricting movement in her right Achilles was released. “They cleaned it out, there was blood there. Maybe because I jumped too much, blood accumulated. Let’s just say my Achilles was stuck to the skin,” Petrokina explained.

The ISU Challenger will be held in Tallinn on November 27–28.
