European pairs champions Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin expressed disappointment with their short program at the Finland Grand Prix, noting mistakes and the pressure of the Olympic season. Their comments were reported by Sports correspondent Maya Bagryantseva. Here’s a translation.

“Today we lost a lot of points; of course, this isn’t the performance we expect from ourselves. Yes, 70 points is a decent score, but we know we’re aiming for more. After the short program, everything is very close – the top four pairs are separated by almost nothing. Tomorrow, everything starts from zero. The top four are within about one point, so tomorrow it all begins anew.

You can see from this season’s competitions that everyone is more nervous than usual – apparently, that’s the effect of the Olympic season,” said Hase.

“The second half of the program didn’t go well at all today. First, we lost balance on the lift, and I had to take an extra step to save the element. Because of that, I lost count and almost did an extra rotation. After that, we were catching up with the music, entered the death spiral a bit late and cautiously, and as a result, there was a problem with the death spiral too. We fought through it, but at that point, it couldn’t be saved. I cursed to myself and went on to the spin—but my concentration was lost, yes. We probably got out of rhythm, and that’s where the problems came from.

I’m not going to rewatch the performance yet – there’s no point. Tomorrow is the free skate, and we need to focus on that,” Volodin added.”
