Ami Nakai (17), who triumphed at her Grand Prix debut in the French Grand Prix, began her second Grand Prix event at Skate Canada with a fourth-place finish in the short program, scoring 66.55 points. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

Nakai struggled with nerves as she opened her routine with a challenging triple axel but fell during the attempt. She later performed a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination, where the toe loop was judged under-rotated. Visibly disappointed, Nakai placed her hands on her head as her performance concluded. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I felt this strange nervousness. Even though I thought I wasn’t nervous, it showed during the actual performance. But this is something to learn from moving forward.”

Nakai’s free skate will include another triple axel in her layout. Assessing her mistakes, she noted, “My axis tilted during the takeoff, so I think the issue was with the takeoff itself. I also hesitated a little and had too many thoughts running through my mind, which led to the mistakes.” Determined to bounce back, she encouraged herself: “If I perform with confidence tomorrow, I’ll be fine.”
