Alexei Yagudin shares his thoughts on Adeliia Petrosian’s potential on the international stage, emphasizing the need for quad jumps and the triple axel while assessing her challenges and opportunities. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Adeliia Petrosian secured victory at the Russian Grand Prix in Magnitogorsk. However, during her free skate, she struggled with attempting a quad jump, resulting in a fall.

Q: Who impressed you today? Is Adeliia Petrosian standing out?

Alexei Yagudin: We’re highlighting Adeliia now because she’s the one who will represent us at the Olympics. At the same time, there are higher expectations and closer scrutiny around her, as the international stage can be unforgiving. If you’d asked me a year ago, I might have said Adeliia Petrosian was an indisputable global leader. But now, we see there are several other excellent skaters in the mix, including Amber Glenn, Loena Hendrickx, and a number of Japanese skaters.

Q: Are quad jumps and the triple Axel necessary for her?

Alexei Yagudin: Ultimately, deciding this is up to her coaching team. It’s clear that the triple Axel is a valuable asset, but it also carries risks in the short program. We saw those risks with Sasha Trusova at the Olympics and the consequences they can bring. But in the free skate, I believe quad jumps will be essential. She’ll have limited chances without them, especially since she’s capable of landing them—I saw her nail them during morning practice.”
