Russian figure skater Adeliia Petrosian reflects on her victory at the first stage of the Russian Grand Prix in Magnitogorsk while sharing her challenges, goals of restoring her triple axel, and personal approach to managing competition pressure. Here’s a translation of her comments.
On Her Performance
“My skate, to put it mildly, wasn’t good because none of my jumps came easily. Every jump was a battle. Skating today felt really difficult – I overthought things before stepping onto the ice and ended up spiraling a bit. I need to work on calming myself down before competing,” Petrosian confessed.
She also noted the support she received from the audience. “The spectators helped me a lot. I feel like it was thanks to them that I managed to avoid falling midway through – I kept fighting for my jumps. I really wanted to land the quad toe loop; we even planned to attempt two. But I already knew I was going to do just one, and the goal was to execute it as perfectly as possible. Instead, it turned out as poorly as possible. Well, I guess that’s how it goes.”
The skater emphasized her efforts to bring a fresh approach to each competition: “I try to approach every event as a new opportunity. I don’t dwell on past performances. I always find warmth and motivation in certain individual victories that are meaningful to me.”
On Plans for the Triple Axel
When asked if she planned to restore the triple axel for her programs, Petrosian responded confidently: “Yes, absolutely! I had already begun working on it before this stage. I hope I’ll be able to recover it soon.”
She added, “Before my injury, I had been regaining it in training, but since the injury, I haven’t been able to land it yet. It was very close before. As for now – who knows, haha.”
On Challenges and Mental Preparation
Petrosian spoke about her biggest challenge in her current training and competing period: “I think the hardest thing now is to fully focus on my work and not get distracted by anything. If something doesn’t go well, I try not to become chaotic or overwhelmed.”
When asked about any special strategies she uses for preparation, Petrosian explained how she copes with competition pressure: “I don’t work with psychologists. I handle it myself. Whenever I feel pressure, I talk to myself and try to detach from it.”
Regarding relaxation outside of training, Petrosian admitted she doesn’t really take time off: “Honestly, I don’t get much time to step away from training. I do listen to some music – just yesterday, my mom and I finished watching Game of Thrones. I liked it. It was brutal, but it was good,” she said, smiling during an interview with Alina Zagitova for Channel One.
Always Prepared: Petrosian’s Unique Bag Essential
Petrosian also shared a quirky insight during her post-competition interview. When asked about the small bag she carries everywhere, she revealed its purpose: “It’s actually full of all my medications – I always take them with me. Just in case something happens, you never know. You can’t be too careful.”
When asked if her bag could be considered “first aid,” Petrosian laughed and agreed: “I’d say yes, it’s like a mega-first aid kit, haha.”
