Tatiana Tarasova expresses optimism about the return of Russian figure skaters to ISU tournaments in 2026 and voices hope for full representation of their country, not just under neutral status. Here’s a translation of her comments.
Recent reports suggest that Russian and Belarusian figure skaters may be allowed to participate in International Skating Union (ISU) events during the 2026/27 season, albeit under neutral status. Tatiana Tarasova shared her thoughts on the potential return.
“I thought this would be the case – there was no other scenario in my mind. But why only under neutral status? We’ve already spent so many years without our flag and anthem. Are we really destined to have it this way forever? I hope not,” she said. “Of course, no one would ever confuse our athletes with those of any other country; they represent the results and pride of our nation.”
Tarasova thanked the U.S. Federation for not opposing the return of Russian skaters. Today, the news outlet R-Sport reported that major federations, such as those of the United States and Japan, are not against Russian skaters returning to ISU competitions.
“I’m grateful to them for respecting our figure skating and our athletes. We frequently visit their countries to teach, and we contribute to the training of their skaters,” Tarasova stated.
