Madison Chock: “For the RD, I wanted to incorporate animal prints because they’re so quintessentially 90s. That’s why my dress features a lot of tiger patterns and chains – those were hallmark elements from that era.”

Madison Chock shared her thoughts on the inspiration behind her 90s-themed costume after the duo’s victory in the rhythm dance at the Grand Prix China in Chongqing. In an interview with Sports correspondent Maya Bagryantseva, Chock and Bates expressed their enthusiasm for the start of the Olympic season. Here’s a translation of their comments.
Madison Chock: We’re thrilled to finally kick off the season. This year, we’re starting in Chongqing, which has become a bit of a tradition for us during Olympic seasons – we always perform in China. Not everything went perfectly today; there were a couple of close calls. Overall, though, we’re happy with how it went. We’ve already identified things to work on, and we know how we’ll improve.
Evan Bates: Our rhythm dance has a completely different vibe compared to our free dance. It’s dynamic, energetic, and very dance-driven.
Madison Chock: As for our music choice, we had a lot of options. I absolutely adore 90s music – it makes me so nostalgic. For us, Lenny Kravitz is one of the standout stars of that era. He has so many iconic albums and songs. It felt like we had to include American Woman – I mean, it’s about me, right? Haha.
Evan Bates: The biggest challenge was deciding which of Lenny’s iconic looks we wanted to draw from for our costumes. His wardrobe is incredible – bright, trendy, and bold. I also wanted to use this as an opportunity for Madi to showcase her amazing design skills, and there was so much room for creativity. My costume is a combination of details inspired by several of Lenny’s outfits. The only thing missing is a scarf!”
According to Chock, she had a significant hand in designing their costumes for both programs. “For the rhythm dance, I wanted to incorporate animal prints because they’re so quintessentially 90s. That’s why my dress features a lot of tiger patterns and chains – those were hallmark elements from that era. When I think of that time, I picture fashion shows of the 90s, especially Roberto Cavalli collections.”
Chock emphasized the importance of specific accessories. “I absolutely wanted to wear a choker – it was a signature piece of the 90s. I remember having one made of plastic back then. For this costume, we designed a Chanel – inspired choker, and it looks stunning.”
Reflecting on their Olympic cycle, Chock noted the progression through decades of music and styles. “We’ve danced to themes from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and now the 90s. It’s been so much fun and such a creative journey. But I think it might be time to return to more specific dance styles in future seasons. After all, that’s what made ice dance the discipline we love so much today.”
