Japanese figure skater Sota Yamamoto is ready to compete at the Grand Prix China, showing recovery progress from a recent back injury with confidence and adaptability in his approach to the competition. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.

Sota Yamamoto (25), who represented Japan at the 2023 World Championships, is showing signs of recovery from a back injury as he prepares to compete at the Grand Prix China.

Yamamoto suffered from lower back pain in September, which forced him to withdraw from the Challenger Series Trialeti Trophy earlier this month after arriving at the venue. He was also off the ice for about a week, enduring a frustrating recovery period. However, after undergoing thorough care and treatment, Yamamoto is optimistic about his condition. “My back is heading in a positive direction. I’m just really happy to have arrived here without any worsening of my injury,” he said. Despite limited training time, Yamamoto expressed confidence in his ability to face the upcoming competition.

During practice, Yamamoto successfully landed a combination of quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop and a clean quadruple salchow, demonstrating his steady progress. While his program layout is not yet finalized, he explained his approach: “I’m weighing my options – whether to go for the 4-3 combination or to perform flip-toe, or perhaps both the 4-3 and salchow. I want to assess my condition calmly and decide in the moment.” Looking ahead, he conveyed determination and a positive attitude: “I want to push myself while having fun exploring my limits.”
