Belgian figure skater Nina Pinzarrone prioritizes recovery after a difficult year, skipping Grand Prix events to focus on full health and preparation for major competitions in the latter half of the season, including the Winter Olympics. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Sporza.
Nina Pinzarrone will not compete in any Grand Prix events leading up to the Winter Olympics. The 18-year-old skater has only recently returned to training following a minor foot surgery. “I still have time,” she said calmly, demonstrating her composed approach to the situation.
Pinzarrone has endured a challenging few months. In May, she suffered a fracture in her foot, and complications arose when an open wound caused an infection that extended up to her knee.
“I’ve received numerous injections over the past few years, and these treatments have weakened my skin,” she explained. “The wound wouldn’t heal properly and had to be cleaned and closed again in the hospital.”
As a result, Pinzarrone only resumed skating in September. “Things are improving, but together with my team, we decided to skip the Grand Prix events this season.”
“This season is unique, as we are focusing primarily on the second half with the European Championships, the Winter Olympics, and the World Championships. This decision allows me to avoid putting too much pressure on myself and gives me the chance to fully recover.”
“This is definitely not a step backward,” Pinzarrone emphasized. “It’s simply a more constructive path to the Olympics. I still have time to train, so I can prepare at my own pace.”
When the 18-year-old figure skater will return to competition remains uncertain. “I’m not entirely sure yet, but I think I’ll compete in the Belgian Championships later this year. In any case, I won’t be taking any risks.”
