Rion Sumiyoshi (22), known for her challenging quad jumps, is poised for her first Winter Olympics and making strides in both technical elements and artistic expression ahead of the Grand Prix series Here’s a translation of her comments.
Sumiyoshi demonstrated her growing command of international competition at September’s Lombardia Trophy, part of the Challenger Series in Italy. She claimed her first International Skating Union (ISU) victory, overtaking reigning World Champion Alysa Liu (USA) in a dramatic reversal during the free skate after placing third in the short program.
While her quad toe loop in the free skate received an under-rotation call, Sumiyoshi’s overall performance impressed with consistently strong program component scores (PCS), all in the 8-point range
Speaking about her performance, Sumiyoshi noted her PCS improvement across competitions:
“Consistency in program component scores has helped me a lot. Even if my quad jumps don’t go as planned, I can still earn points with the other areas of my performance.”
The stability in Sumiyoshi’s skating is partly attributed to mental training that she began two years ago, improving her focus and composure during competitions. Regarding her quad jumps, she shared an optimistic outlook:
“The feeling for quads is getting better and better. I feel like I can land them this season, and my goal is to succeed with them during the Grand Prix events.”
Sumiyoshi expressed her determination for the season:
“Going to the Olympics is my number one goal this year. To achieve that, I want to tackle each step one by one.”
Her Olympic campaign officially begins at the first Grand Prix event – the France Cup – where her continued growth and increasing quad jump precision could bring her closer to her dream of the Winter Games.
