Adeliia Petrosian reflected on overcoming doubts about competing in the Olympic qualifier and explained her decision to use previous programs for the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Here’s a translation of her comments.

Adeliia Petrosian, who won the Olympic qualification tournament and secured an individual spot for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, shared her struggles leading up to the competition and her decision to perform with earlier successful programs.

She admitted that the preparation for the qualifiers had been mentally and emotionally taxing, leaving her on the verge of withdrawing. However, her coaches and support team helped her through this challenging period.

“People came to talk to me and told me that withdrawing wasn’t even up for discussion and that I would regret it if I quit.

When you’re in such despair, you don’t listen to advice. But now I understand that if I hadn’t competed in the qualifier and hadn’t secured the spot, it would’ve been a terrible mistake. Daniil Markovich (Gleikhengauz) spent a lot of time talking to me during this period. You have to seize your opportunities – it’s not about giving up when you’ve already spent 14 years in figure skating.”

Petrosian explained that even though she had been fortunate to avoid major injuries throughout her career, a prolonged period without training unsettled her:

“The long break wasn’t difficult because I couldn’t jump – it was the psychological impact that left its mark. And afterward, of course, the jumps became an additional challenge.”

Petrosian also explained the rationale behind using previous programs for the Milan-Cortina Olympics. In her short program, she skates to a medley of Michael Jackson songs, while her free skate is set to “Yo Soy Maria” by Astor Piazzolla.

“The free skate program from that season was one of the best in my career. So, there were no questions about keeping it.

As for the short program, it’s energetic and powerful. My coaches told me it’s the perfect choice for the international stage.”

Petrosian acknowledged that her recent performances hadn’t fully captured the essence of the programs:

“I didn’t quite express everything we had intended in both programs today and yesterday. But I hope it will be better as I continue.”
