Russian figure skater Alina Gorbacheva arrived in Beijing as a reserve for the Olympic qualifying competition, where Adeliia Petrosian and Petr Gumennik will compete under neutral status. Gorbacheva was considered as a possible replacement for Petrosian due to injury concerns. Here’s a translation.

Bronze medalist at the Russian Figure Skating Championships, Alina Gorbacheva, and her coach Sofia Fedchenko have arrived in Beijing, according to Sport24. The Olympic qualifying event, scheduled from September 19 to 21 in the Chinese capital, will feature Russian skaters Adeliia Petrosian and Petr Gumennik competing under a neutral status. However, Gorbacheva has been registered for the tournament as a reserve.

Gorbacheva confirmed her trip to Beijing in a social media post after completing the pre-Olympic training camp held in Krasnoyarsk:

“The pre-Olympic camp for the Russian team on the wonderful rink in Krasnoyarsk has come to an end! I would like to thank the Russian Figure Skating Federation for providing us with such a great atmosphere and training conditions, as well as the opportunity to travel to Beijing!

I wish Adeliia Petrosian and Petr Gumennik smooth ice and nerves of steel! May everything go as planned!” Gorbacheva wrote.

The possibility of replacing Petrosian with Gorbacheva had been considered by the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) up until the last moment, as reported by Sport Express. Gorbacheva’s coach, Sofia Fedchenko, actively supported this alternative.

According to the publication, Petrosian’s preparation was interrupted at times due to lingering effects of an injury, and her quad jumps are reportedly not yet consistent. Ultimately, Petrosian remains the primary competitor, while Gorbacheva stands by as a substitute.

The tournament is crucial for securing spots at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and despite the challenges, the Russian team hopes for strong performances as neutral athletes in the event.
