Ice dancers Natalie and Filip Taschler have undergone significant changes ahead of the new season, including switching coaches and relocating to a training center in Helsinki. The eighth-place duo from the 2023 World Championships is currently in Italy, participating in a week-long training camp at the home of their coach, Maurizio Margaglio. Here’s a translation of their comments.
Located about an hour from Rome amidst a forest of pine trees, the training facility features an ice rink where the Taschler siblings spend up to five hours daily perfecting their new routines and style. For their free dance, they have chosen music from the film The Matrix. Their rhythm dance is inspired by the “street latino style.”
“Street Latino style, it’s like ‘Latin America.’ And for the free dance, we picked The Matrix,” explained Filip Taschler.
Overseeing their training is Maurizio Margaglio, the 2001 World and European Champion and Olympic bronze medalist. “He brings us positive energy and the mindset to believe in ourselves,” noted Natalie Taschlerova.
Margaglio sees great potential in the duo. “They are strong skaters with exceptional dance chemistry. Their dancing feels very natural – this is something unique,” he said. Assisting Margaglio is fellow Italian and choreographer Massimo Scali, known for his emotionally engaging routines.
The Taschlers moved to Margaglio after working with another Italian coach, Matteo Zanni, under whom they felt their results had stagnated over the past two seasons. Now, they hope to return to the top ten in major international events.
This season is particularly important for the pair, as it includes the European Championships, the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, and the World Championships, which will be held in their home country. However, the siblings are keeping a balanced perspective.
“The main goal this season is to be happy, enjoy ourselves, and show others that it’s just skating – it’s not a matter of life and death,” Natalie Taschlerova emphasized.
