“It portrays a couple saying goodbye during wartime. We view ourselves as a team that excels in storytelling, so we aim for the audience to experience the program as a cohesive narrative.” Hannah Lim and Ye Quan on their free dance

On Sunday, September 7, Hannah Lim and Ye Quan delivered their free dance performance at the 2025 ISU Challenger Series Kinoshita Cup in Osaka, Japan. Skating to Samuel Barber’s Adagio For Strings, the duo scored 105.17 in the free dance Here’s a translation of their comments posted on MFocus.
Following the performance, Lim and Quan shared mixed feelings about their results. “While we’re happy with our artistic expression and storytelling, we’re disappointed with the lower-than-usual technical scores,” Lim explained.
“Our focus before the next competition will be on stabilizing the technical levels, particularly for the pattern step and step sequence, and enhancing the consistency of elements like twizzles and lifts.” Despite receiving a Level 4 rating for their newly debuted curve lift, a one-point deduction for exceeding the maximum lift duration (8 seconds) left room for improvement.
Lim also commented on adjustments to their costumes following the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships earlier this season. “We redesigned the costumes by adding crystals to make them more visually striking. The original material was prone to tearing, so we created competition-specific dresses that can last through the season,” she noted. Speaking about Quan’s outfit, designed to highlight its military theme, Lim added, “We updated it with buttons and stripes to make the soldier concept more prominent – it’s almost like a ‘promotion,’ which is quite amusing.”
Additionally, a dramatic salute gesture was incorporated into the program’s conclusion on the suggestion of their coach, Marie-France Dubreuil. “We added it just a day before the competition,” Lim shared, “and it really helped emphasize the program’s emotional ending.”
Quan elaborated on the storyline behind their free dance: “It portrays a couple saying goodbye during wartime. We view ourselves as a team that excels in storytelling, so we aim for the audience to experience the program as a cohesive narrative.”
Lim and Quan will next compete at the CS Tbilisi Trophy in Georgia and the Warsaw Cup later in the season. Regarding their approach to the second half of the season, the pair stated: “Since we have only one Grand Prix event this year, we have more time to refine our program. Through additional competitions, we plan to evaluate and perfect our performance heading into the later stages of the season.”
