Tatiana Tarasova on same-sex pairs in figure skating: “In some countries, there are fewer boys skating, which is why such ice dance pairs are forming. In Russia, we have enough of everything, and everything is done ‘the traditional way.'”

Same-sex pairs in figure skating should first compete in separate events to assess how this format develops, said Tatiana Tarasova in an interview with TASS. Here’s a translation of her comments.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the Finnish Figure Skating Association has approved a female pair to compete in ice dance competitions. Emma Aalto (19) and Milly Colling (20) will become the first same-sex pair in the history of figure skating. To accommodate this, the federation amended its rules, replacing the traditional definition of “man and woman” with “Skater A” and “Skater B.”
“We need to test these duos in separate competitions first to see what this is like and how it will evolve. After that, professionals can decide how to incorporate it into competitions as they see fit. In some countries, there are fewer boys or men skating, which is why such ice dance pairs are forming. In Russia, we have enough of everything, and everything is done ‘the traditional way,’” said Tarasova.
