Mone Chiba (20), the bronze medalist from the 2025 World Championships, competed in her second event of the season and scored 73.11 points in the short program, making a promising start. Returning to her previous season’s program, The Last Dance, she delivered a lively and expressive performance, narrowly missing her personal best of 73.44 points. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

“I wanted to make this program more captivating and charming than last year. That desire ended up putting pressure on me, but I believed that if I could execute my jumps as I do in practice, the audience would enjoy and engage with the performance. I think I was able to achieve that first step today,” Chiba reflected.

At her season-opening event, the Summer Cup in August, Chiba performed her new program Sakura (Version for Orchestra) but fell on two jumps, scoring 60.60 points. Returning to her tried-and-true program, she displayed steady improvement at this competition. “Some of my jumps were not as smooth as in practice, but with more experience and performances, I hope to create a new version of The Last Dance,” she said.

The free skate is scheduled for September 6, where Chiba will debut her interpretation of Romeo and Juliet in an international competition. “I want to trust my legs and execute each jump carefully, one step at a time,” she said with determination.
