2022 Olympic champion Anna Shcherbakova discusses her career transition, her current disinterest in coaching, and her relationship with her former coach, Eteri Tutberidze. Here’s a translation of her comments.
Anna Shcherbakova revealed that she has no plans to become a coach.
“I’m currently studying to be a coach, but I can’t say that I have any concrete plans to pursue this profession. I do conduct masterclasses and have held training camps a few times.
In my current rhythm of life, I can’t see myself as a coach. After spending 24 hours a day fully immersed in figure skating during my competitive career, now that so many new opportunities have opened up in front of me, I want to try everything and explore life outside the rink. It’s all so fascinating.
At the moment, I can’t imagine closing myself off at the rink again because coaching is essentially going through the same athlete’s journey, only with many, many athletes at the same time. You live through every step of it with each one of them.
It feels like I’m not yet ready to immerse myself in all of that again. Perhaps there will come a time when I feel that way – I’m not ruling it out – but for now, no,” said the 2022 Olympic champion.
Anna Shcherbakova shared that she still feels like a child in the presence of her former coach, Eteri Tutberidze.
“Q: Do you miss Tutberidze?
Anna Shcherbakova: I have always maintained a sense of hierarchy with my coaches. I understood that I had to follow everything they said. I never thought my opinions were particularly welcome – I always did exactly what I was told. There was a clear distinction between coach and athlete. We never discussed casual things like how the day went or anything like that.
Q: Has that dynamic changed now?
Anna Shcherbakova: We’ve been through so much together, and I am very grateful to her for that. But the hierarchy has stayed the same. I still feel like a child in her presence – I want to stand up straight and just nod, said the 2022 Olympic champion during a fan meeting.”

Cant blame Anna that she left.
I like Tutberidze. But that was some fucked up shit she did.
