Adam Siao Him Fa, the 2024 World Championships bronze medalist, shares his preparation and ambitious plans for the Milan Winter Olympics, featuring new programs inspired by artistic masters and a strategy to balance recovery and training. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on L’Equipe.
Despite a promising start to his summer preparation, Adam Siao Him Fa is currently dealing with a mild cold, jokingly blaming air conditioning for a scratchy throat and nose.
“The altitude,” he jokes. At 24 years old, Siao Him Fa is confident in his ability to adapt, having already endured tougher setbacks, including two right ankle injuries last winter and a psoas tear discovered after placing fourth at the World Championships in Boston. “At least now I know why I had hip pain,” he joked.
To prepare for the upcoming Milan Olympics, Siao Him Fa adopted a strategic approach to his season and programs. Reflecting on his offseason, he explained:
“In May, I spent some time vacationing in Nice because I was tired of traveling. After that, I spent a few days at my parents’ home in Bordeaux and then started a series of training camps: four weeks in Courmayeur, one in Megève, five in Anglet, and one more in Nice.”
The focus this year has been on reducing travel to maximize recovery and training:
“Unlike previous offseasons, I didn’t appear in many exhibitions. I stayed more grounded to limit fatigue and to focus on myself,” he said.
After Lombardia Trophy where he will face Ilia Malinin and Yuma Kagiyama, Adam Siao Him Fa will compete at the Grand Prix de France (October 17–19 in Angers) and the Grand Prix of Finland (November 21–23), choosing the latter over the Chinese Grand Prix for logistical reasons.
“Again, we aimed to reduce travel and allow more time for work and recovery,” he emphasized. However, his sights remain set on qualifying for the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan, this December (December 4–7).
“I can’t wait! There’s a bit of stress, but I’m trying to keep perspective. This is going to be an exciting season. My goal is to reclaim the European championship title (he finished third last year) and aim for a medal at the Olympics.”
Adam Siao Him Fa aims to deliver top performances this season through two new choreographies crafted by Benoit Richaud. “I just let him do his thing,” laughed Siao Him Fa. “Honestly, I didn’t have much to add – it all clicked perfectly. After so many years working together, Benoit knows exactly what I can feel and convey on the ice.”
While the new programs don’t share a direct musical theme as his past programs did, they still carry an artistic dialogue. The short program, set to La Terre vue du ciel, is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, while the free skate draws from Michelangelo and features music by Philip Glass.
“I’m not portraying these geniuses the way I embodied characters from Dune last year – after all, that kind of pressure could crush me. This approach is more personal, rooted in emotion,” he clarified.
