Shizuka Arakawa (43) and Daisuke Takahashi (39), opened up about their friendship and playful pranks during a live appearance on the variety show Poka Poka on September 21. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on Tokyo Sports.

On the show, Shizuka Arakawa jokingly commented about how inconvenient it is to contact Daisuke Takahashi through his manager due to his notorious habit of being unresponsive. Takahashi’s reluctance to respond to messages, particularly on LINE, had been a recurring topic on the program, and his skating friends seem genuinely perplexed by it.

“It used to be that he’d read your message but not reply, which was already pretty normal. But recently, he doesn’t even open the messages. It’s like, ‘Is he even alive?’” Arakawa laughed. Takahashi then admitted that he often acknowledges receiving messages but still doesn’t reply.

Arakawa added with a grin that no one gets angry about it:

“Everyone just kind of accepts it, like, ‘That’s just the kind of creature Dai-chan (Takahashi) is.’”

Takahashi playfully accused Arakawa of pulling subtle but mischievous pranks, asking her to “cut it out.” The two often perform together in ice shows alongside other skaters, and Takahashi shared a particularly memorable prank from one of their drinking parties:

“We were drinking in someone’s (hotel) room – probably Shizuka’s. After a night of drinking, I passed out, and when I woke up, some of my leg hair was gone. Not completely shaved, just in patches. There were also things like fake cockroach toys in my shoes. I don’t get mad, but I do think, ‘Oh, come on, seriously?’”

Arakawa confessed to the leg-shaving prank: “His reactions are so funny that, when I get an idea, I can’t resist. He’s often passed out drunk, so I’ll start by gently tugging on his leg hair to see if he notices, but then the pranks escalate a little from there. However, when he doesn’t wake up and I can’t see a reaction, I just give up and go to bed,” she said with a laugh.
