Ottawa, ON (Aug. 19, 2025) – Keegan Messing, the two-time Canadian National Men’s Champion, has officially announced his return to competitive figure skating. After retiring from the sport in May 2023, Messing is back on the ice and ready to compete in the 2025-26 Olympic season.

In an announcement, Keegan Messing revealed his decision to return to competitive skating. The 31-year-old skater will continue training in his hometown of Anchorage, Alaska, under the guidance of his long-time coach, Ralph Burghart.

Messing, a five-time national medallist and two-time Olympian, represented Canada at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. Since his retirement, he has been a staple on the professional skating circuit, performing in shows like Stars on Ice. It was during the most recent show season that he decided to reignite his competitive career.

Messing shared what motivated his unexpected return to competition:

“During the Stars On Ice tour, I realized I was skating at a high level again, and that sparked my decision to return. I’ve put in the work, regained my jumps, and rediscovered the fire within myself to train. My focus now is to be stronger than when I retired and to secure a spot on the Olympic team,” said Messing.

This inspiring decision paves the way for Messing to make another run at the sport’s most prestigious stage—the Winter Olympics.

This August, Messing will join other elite Canadian skaters at Skate Canada’s annual High Performance Camp in Mississauga, Ontario. Here, officials will assess his readiness through evaluations of his competitive programs. The camp is a crucial step in determining his qualification for domestic events and potential international assignments as he works toward his goal of representing Canada at the 2026 Games.
