Aleksandr Selevko has spent six months training in the United States under renowned coaches and has already tested his new programs in competition, setting his sights on the upcoming Olympic season. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on ERR.
After finishing 9th at the 2025 European Championships in January – a result that left him disappointed – Selevko moved overseas and began training near Boston under the guidance of acclaimed coaches Alexei Letov and Olga Ganicheva. Adjusting to this new training environment has had its challenges.
“The first two months went really well, but after that, I started having health issues. I think the last two months have been a little better,” Selevko said.
Last week, Selevko competed in the United States with his new programs, securing second place with 235 points. His longtime coach, Irina Kononova, who monitors his progress from Tallinn, noted that while the initial competition included mistakes, there’s still time to improve:
“There were errors in the first competition. Stability in execution still needs work, but it’s only August – it’s too early to expect perfect performances,” Kononova stated.
Selevko himself was satisfied with his free skate: “I’m happy with the free skate; I landed two quad jumps and a triple axel. I think I’m in good shape,” he said.
As the silver medalist from the 2024 European Championships, Selevko aims to include three quad jumps in his free skate this season. His new short program, set to Prince’s song Kiss, brings a bold and sexy style:
“This year, we’re trying to change the style. It’s interesting and allows to explore different possibilities,” Kononova noted.
Selevko has made significant progress in strength, speed, and technique thanks to his rigorous training in the U.S., where he spends five consecutive hours on the ice daily. “I can dedicate one session to jumps, another to the short program, and another to the free skate. Sometimes I just skate freely,” he explained.
After a week of training in Tallinn, Aleksandr Selevko will return to the U.S. to continue building his form. His next competitions will be in October and November, marking the start of his campaign to qualify for the Olympics.
