“Nobody will doubt what country these athletes come from, nor should anyone question the patriotism of those who compete. They are true patriots – of their country, their sport, and their coaches.” Ilia Averbukh on the idea of Russian athletes competing under a neutral flag

Choreographer Ilia Averbukh supports the idea of Russian athletes competing under a neutral flag, emphasizing the importance of their participation on the global stage despite ongoing restrictions. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Responding to a survey conducted by Sport-Express, in which 20 out of 22 Russian figure skaters supported competing internationally without their country’s flag and anthem (two participants abstained, and none opposed), Averbukh expressed his strong support for their stance.

“Our figure skaters endorsed competing in international competitions without the flag and anthem? I completely agree with them and fully support their decision to participate. The recent victories of our swimmers at the World Championships are further proof of the importance of showing up and competing.

Nobody will doubt what country these athletes come from, nor should anyone question the patriotism of those who compete. They are true patriots – of their country, their sport, and their coaches.

This exclusion of our athletes from international competitions is grossly unfair, dishonest, and reprehensible. Despite all obstacles, we should persevere, compete, and win. The world will be watching, and such participation benefits our sport as a whole.

I stand with all the figure skaters who voted for this and believe we must compete. Fans should understand and support the decision of our athletes,” said Averbukh.
