Russian figure skater Veronika Zhilina, who acquired Azerbaijani citizenship and planned to compete for the new team, faced rejection from both the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) and the ISU Council regarding her transfer request. Here’s a translation of the comment posted on MatchTV.

Earlier reports indicated that the ISU Council had denied Zhilina’s request to represent Azerbaijan. In May, the 17-year-old skater announced that she had obtained an Azerbaijani passport and expressed her desire to represent the country, stating she was eagerly awaiting approval for the transfer.

The International Skating Union (ISU) released an official statement clarifying the process behind its decision:

“The ISU received permission from the Azerbaijan Winter Sports Federation for Veronika Zhilina to change her ISU member status, allowing her to represent Azerbaijan in future ISU competitions, as she had formerly competed for Russia.”

“In accordance with ISU regulations, the matter was reviewed by the ISU Council. After thorough consideration, including an analysis of the submitted documentation, the ISU Council decided to decline the application,” read a statement from the ISU’s press service.

A former winner of the Russian Junior Grand Prix Final and a silver medalist at the Russian National Junior Championships, Zhilina is coached by two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko. However, the skater has missed the past two seasons due to health issues.
