In an interview with Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva, choreographer and coach Benoit Richaud shared his thoughts on former Korean figure skater Eunsoo Lim, who participated in his training camp as a coach. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“Q: Do you work with all the groups yourself?
Benoit Richaud: Yes, of course. But we have a lot of coaches – six or seven, depending on the specific week.”
He elaborated on the current lineup:
“Benoit Richaud: For example, this week, there were me, Leonid Sviridenko, Dmitrii Ovchinnikov, Ans Bocklandt (coach of Belgian skater Nina Pinzarrone), Alexei Mishin, and the Korean coach Eunsoo Lim.
Q: She recently stopped competing and is already coaching?
Benoit Richaud:: Yes, this isn’t her first time bringing Korean skaters she works with to our camps. This year, it turned out at the last minute that one of our coaches couldn’t come due to unforeseen circumstances, so I had to find a replacement quickly. I called Liza Tuktamysheva, but she was traveling to California and couldn’t arrange a European visa in time.”
Richaud then turned to Lim: “I thought, why not try Eunsoo? She’s familiar with our system and, because of her age, she’s still close to the skaters participating in the camp. It worked out wonderfully! I used to be quite skeptical about recently retired athletes working at training camps. I thought they wouldn’t have enough coaching experience – what could they offer the skaters?”
However, Richaud’s perspective changed after seeing the results: “It turned out that young skaters really enjoy having someone who recently competed at major events around. Given this, next year I might invite Liza Tuktamysheva or Evgenia Medvedeva – I’m sure everyone would be thrilled. We already have an excellent team of experienced coaches, and adding someone like them would offer something new for camp participants.”
