The International Skating Union (ISU) Council has denied Russian figure skater Veronika Zhilina’s application for Azerbaijani sports citizenship, according to a source from “R-Sport.”
The council’s meeting, where the decision was made, took place on July 4–5. As a result, the 17-year-old skater will not be able to represent Azerbaijan in the upcoming season.
Earlier, the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) also refused Zhilina’s request to change her sports citizenship from Russia to Azerbaijan. Despite this, the skater had obtained an Azerbaijani passport. Additionally, a source from RIA Novosti reported that Zhilina paid approximately 1 million rubles to the FFKKR as compensation for her training costs. Zhilina has not competed in any events since 2023.
