Tatiana Tarasova asserted that the banning of Russian athletes from international competitions, including the Olympics, is a continuation of the Kamila Valieva doping case. Her comments coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent statement calling for reforms in sports medicine, citing the doping cases of tennis player Maria Sharapova and figure skater Kamila Valieva as examples.

“In such a critical area of work, it’s essential for true professionals to be involved. I completely agree with our president,” Tarasova said.

She added, “Unfortunately, I don’t know if unconventional methods might have been used in Kamila’s case. However, the broader actions that have followed — such as the exclusion of Russian athletes from the Olympics and other international competitions — are, in my opinion, a continuation of that case.”

Tarasova expressed her belief that Kamila Valieva’s immense talent may have contributed to the scrutiny and actions against her: “Kamila is such an extraordinarily talented girl. She would have been unbeatable for years to come, which is why, in my opinion, she was banned.”

  1. Honestly, the 40 other drugs in her system argument doesn’t matter much, they weren’t illegal.

She was banned because Shvetsky drugged her. I would have loved to see her have a long successful career, but her training team robbed her of any chance of success while she was still a child.

Yes, everything is totally possible. I mean its totally possible that she also accidentally ingested 40 plus other drugs and substances as well. I mean surely the poor old grandfather needs those 40+ medicines to function otherwise he can’t burp on the glass for Kamila to drink. If you can’t tell that the post is sarcasm then I don’t know what else to tell you.

  4. Personally, I think the story with the grandpa is perfectly plausible, surface contamination. It’s why restaurants and food plants caution that even if their stuff is gluten-free, nut free, etc, they warn of potential contamination, since it’s made in the same place. Accidental ingestion, I think it was, and the amount in her system at the time of the sample was negligible not enough to affect her performance.

Kamila is incredibly talented. She may have been unbeatable for this whole quad between Olympics. She may have injured herself and quit. We’ll never know. But she wasn’t banned because she was too good. Her being banned, and we can discuss if 4 years really were necessary for a first time offender, came about because there was doping involved. Whether it was with or without her knowledge is secondary. If Tarasova is pissed off because this talented kid didn’t get to show what she was capable of, that’s fair. But she needs to put the blame where it belongs: on whoever gave Kamila the forbidden substances. If you are caught breaking the law and the judge puts you away for 5 years, it’s not the judges fault you’re in prison. They’re just applying the rules and regulations the law provides.
Also, don’t call it “unconventional methods”, Tatiana. That’s downplaying doping in a horrid manner.
