The ISU didn’t approve Russian figure skater Veronika Zhilina’s transfer to Azerbaijan

As reported by Sputnik Azerbaijan, despite the fact that Zhilina has not competed for the Russian national team in two years, the International Skating Union (ISU) considers an official release letter from the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (FSFR) to be a fundamental requirement.

Earlier, the FSFR denied approval for the skater, who recently obtained an Azerbaijani passport, to change her sports citizenship.

It is expected that key negotiations regarding her case will take place shortly before or during the Junior Grand Prix in Baku, scheduled for September 24–27, where ISU leadership has also been invited.

Veronka Zhilina, 17, had a successful 2022/23 season, winning the Russian Junior Grand Prix Final and earning a silver medal at the National Championships.

Earlier this month, Veronika posted on her Instagram:

“Dear friends, thank you all for your concern.

Surely many of you are aware that I suffered a severe spinal injury, so I was treated and was recovering for a very long time, that is why I have not competed in Russia at any official start for 2 seasons (23/24 and 24/25). And I am no longer a member of the Russian national team.

I was able to withstand all the challenges thanks to my family: my mom and dad, my sister and my coach Evgeny Viktorovich Plushenko.

I want you to know that I am very grateful to Russia and everyone who has helped me in any way here, I appreciate everyone’s contribution to my development and formation and, of course, your support. I trained at a private academy, but I always felt like a member of a large figure skating community.

My life has been connected with Baku for several years, I travel here very often, and recently I received a passport. Azerbaijan is a country that I have fallen in love with and found my second home in, and I have made many new friends and colleagues here.

I will be happy to represent Azerbaijan in the future, which is now not only in my soul, but also in my heart.

I’m really waiting for the permission for my transition!

I also turn 17 tomorrow, and I will be very grateful to everyone for supporting me on my new path.”
