The World Team Trophy figure skating competition was held in Tokyo from April 17 to April 19. Russian skater Tuktamysheva attended the event as a commentator. In her blog on Sports, Tuktamysheva shared her opinion that she has much to learn from American skater Alysa Liu. Here’a a translation of her comment.
“I really missed the competitive atmosphere, even though now I’m in a different role.
Commentating from a studio versus being present at the arena is completely different. First off, at the arena, you look at all the athletes at once — it’s not the camera operator or director of the broadcast deciding whom to focus on, but you. You can also attend training sessions, observe how the athlete is feeling, see their interactions with their coach, and understand their mindset.
On-screen, all of that doesn’t quite translate in the same way. When you’re physically present at the competition, you can see the bigger picture and get a clearer sense of what’s happening around you. That’s why, of course, commentating on-site is much more interesting. You immediately notice things like who is covering more of the ice, who is engaging the space more energetically, and who feels less dynamic.
You catch the energy of the athlete and the vibe of the competition overall. Yes, that comes through on TV too, but sometimes it’s different. For example, when you see one warm-up group, it might feel more relaxed, while the next group comes across as more intense. When you’re there in person, those nuances are easier to pick up.
At the team event, most skaters seemed relatively at ease, though there were a few who appeared quite nervous before stepping onto the ice. Perhaps not in the same way as at the World Championships, but still.
Alysa Liu, however, came out as calm as could be. She’s someone who truly enjoys every moment of life and takes pleasure in everything she does in figure skating. Even I couldn’t find so much joy on the ice as she does. I still need to learn this from her, ha-ha,” wrote Tuktamysheva.
