The exhibition gala for the World Team Trophy in figure skating was held on April 20 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Mone Chiba spoke to the media that morning, reflecting on the conclusion of her final competition of the season. Here’s a translation of her comment.

“This was a year where I was able to deliver results, but at the same time, every competition revealed areas where I’m lacking. The higher you go, the more you see what’s still ahead,” she summarized.

This season, Chiba placed second at her debut Grand Prix Final, a breakthrough performance, but she fell short of the podium at the Japanese Nationals, finishing in fourth place. “I was in good form up until the Grand Prix Final, but peaking properly before the Nationals was difficult,” Chiba admitted.

Nonetheless, she earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in March in Boston, USA. Reflecting on these experiences, she shared, “Taking what I’ve learned, next season I’ll need to work the hardest at Nationals. I want to achieve good results in the Grand Prix series, carry that momentum, and be in top condition for Nationals. That’s my big goal.”

Looking ahead to the Olympic season, Chiba has also begun practicing quadruple jumps. “I’m not yet at the point of incorporating quads into my programs, but I want to continue training carefully while avoiding injuries,” she said.

Although she gets only a brief break during the off-season, Chiba remains disciplined. “I think my off-season will mostly be filled with training. This is such an important preparation period that this year, the off-season feels particularly short. The future will definitely come, so I’m just preparing for it. I want to make sure to balance my work with a little fun along the way,” she said.
