Alexander Zhulin commented on the criticism of his choreography. Here’s a translation.
“At the test skates, people come up to me and say, ‘Sasha, you’ve made some absolutely horrific shit; it’s unwatchable.’ And you think to yourself, you’ve worked hard, you’ve got good skaters like Navka-Kostomarov or Sinitsina-Katsalapov. But then someone comes up to you and says straight to your face, ‘It’s absolute trash — terrible music, this part needs to go, this part is diluted, and this part is just bad.’
If I listened to everyone, I would lose my mind. You’ve worked and worked, created something, made an effort, collaborated with choreographers and coaches, and then they tear you down out of nowhere. Of course, it’s July or September, and the program isn’t finished yet. There’s a reason they say you shouldn’t show half-done work to fools.
But very often, at the end of the season, the same people come up to you and say, ‘It wasn’t for nothing that we criticized you because now you’re a world champion.’ You have to turn this into your strength.
I often read comments about myself (I love doing it because it fires me up): ‘That washed-up has-been came up with some absolute garbage. There are real coaches out there, and then there’s this guy doing the same old nonsense over and over again.’
I read that and think to myself, ‘You bastard, tomorrow I’m going to prove you wrong.’ Then I go and work with even more enthusiasm just to prove that person wrong. I imagine some loser with acne sitting there typing those comments. Either you listen to it and turn it into your strength, or you just dismiss it. But some jerk is out there trying to destroy me…” said Zhulin on the show “Katok.”
