Alysa Liu leading after the short program at the 2025 World Championships. In a conversation with Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva, she shared her impressions of her performance and answered a question about the return of Russian skaters. Here’s a translation.

“I loved everything today. From the beginning to the end of the program, I was completely clear-headed — I could see the audience, and during the step sequence, I could even make out specific faces. It was amazing! When you skate and truly enjoy what you’re doing on the ice, it’s an indescribable feeling.

I’ve never regretted leaving the sport at the age of 16. It was the only right decision at the time. Moreover, if I hadn’t left then, I wouldn’t be sitting here today at the World Championships press conference with a small gold medal. Absolutely — my return only happened because I left.

I’m so happy I listened to myself back then, even though people tried to persuade me not to act so hastily and end things so abruptly. I encourage everyone to trust their intuition,” said Liu, as quoted by Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva.

“Would it be more interesting for me to compete if Russian figure skaters were participating in the World Championships? I don’t know, maybe. Honestly, I think the more people competing in an event, the more fun it is.

I like everything about how my life is right now. I absolutely love training, though I try not to do it every single day. I love training at competitions because, honestly, it’s so much fun. I love competing because, believe me, it’s the coolest feeling,” Liu said.
