On March 22, the opening of Alina Zagitova’s medal will take place on the Alley of Fame at the Rosa Khutor resort in Sochi. Tatiana Tarasova commented:

Tatiana Tarasova: We have many Olympic champions who have won the Olympics twice or been world champions ten times. I believe they deserve the recognition of having a medal unveiled on the Alley of Fame as well. But Alina Zagitova belongs among them.

Alina is a good girl, she has been an Olympic champion, and now she is launching her own show. She’s fortunate. Of course, I support the opening of this plaque. How could I be against it? However, I always stand for fairness: if we have multiple-time Olympic champions or ten-time world champions, then they should be recognized as well.

It would make complete sense if Alina Zagitova had become champion in Sochi, but [that title] belonged to Adelina Sotnikova at the time. Still, I am happy for Alina. We have many outstanding Olympic champions who have enriched our sports history with their achievements.

There are those whom the world will remember for centuries, such as Belousova and Protopopov, Pakhomova and Gorshkov, and many others. But they don’t need plaques to be remembered — their influence on figure skating was so transformative that they will never be forgotten. Regardless, I am happy for Alina.

Q: Will the world remember Zagitova?

Tatiana Tarasova: She won the Olympics once, that’s all. No, of course not. Katarina Witt will be remembered because she won medals over many years. But Zagitova is still an Olympic champion.”

Belousova and Protopopov, Pakhomova and Gorshkov who? I had to google what they did. They may be remembered in Russia but no one else remembers them.

    I will always remember Alina!

So, I think she is better remembered than Anna Shcherbakova

Sounds like wanting her cake and eating it too. You can’t on the one end want skaters to perform incredibly hard routines, whether that’s backloading a program like they did with Alina, or putting in multiple quads which more likely than not shortens careers because the injury risk goes up and the wear and tear of ligaments increases, and on the other end want skaters to stick around long enough to win multiple world championships or even Olympics.
