Alena Kostornaia has confirmed her desire to return to competition in 2026. Here’s a translation of her comments.

Kostornaia, the 2020 European champion in women’s singles, currently competes in pairs with Georgi Kunitsa. The duo announced in November 2024 that they would pause their career for two seasons.

“Our plans have not changed yet. We’ll return to competition in 2026. The upcoming year will be challenging for us, but I hope things will improve by the fall and become a bit easier.

This spring, we’ll be performing in Evgeni Plushenko’s tour, and then we don’t plan to perform for several months. We’re likely to return to the stage in December. We’ll take it step by step — starting with shows, followed by training camps, and then a full comeback to competition. I hope we’ll be able to recover and reestablish ourselves among the competitive field.

For now, our schedule is divided between performing ourselves and coaching others. We haven’t been invited to participate in any other projects yet, though it would be interesting! For example, being a team captain at the Channel One Cup. On the other hand, the lack of invitations is an advantage — it means fewer potentially provocative situations that could arise. As the saying goes, ‘Better to stay silent and be thought wise,’” Kostornaia said.
