On March 6th, Kaori Sakamoto (24) held a public practice session, after which she commented on her preparation for the upcoming World Championships. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

During the one and a half hour practice session that started at 7:30 am, she did run-throughs of both her programs to music. She fell during a triple flip and chuckled, admitting she was not in “100% condition,” but believed, “If I continue this for two weeks, I think I will regain confidence.” Despite not being fully in form, she reflected on the lack of fighting spirit she felt at the Winter Asian Games in February, where she won a silver medal, and felt she was recovering from that.

“At the All Japan Championships, I couldn’t perform like myself without being conscious of defending the title. I realized that to beat my former self, I need to compete with that mindset,” she said, reflecting a change of heart before the big stage. Along with aiming to secure three spots for the next Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, she strongly expressed her intention, “I want to go into this World Championships aiming for a fourth consecutive title and a win,” Sakamoto told.
