Czech ice dance team Natalie Taschlerova and Filip Taschler spoke about their performance at the European Championships and preparations for Worlds. Here’s a translation of their comments.
“We are trying to focus on our performance, to show what we practice at home. Whatever happens, happens,” said Natalie Taschlerova.
Before the European Championships, there was talk of medals, and then came the mistake in a rhythm dance, barely scraping into the top ten. Now the goal is simple: a quality performance for their own satisfaction and to enjoy it. “Ranking is absolutely the last thing on our minds. We are going without expectations, not like at the Europeans,” they agree.
“We would like to show what we do at home, clean programs with elements we know, because there were minor mistakes at the Europeans that usually don’t happen,” said Natalie. “Ultimately, the feedback is more valuable than the medal,” her brother Filip added about the hesitation at the European Championships.
The dance duo is now looking forward to training in Italy, mainly no more competitions. “We felt that we needed a longer break, to rest and recharge for the preparation for the World Championships. Last year, we made a mistake by not taking enough time off after the Europeans and then experienced a bit of burnout,” admitted Natalie Taschlerova.
They want to focus on the details and the overall experience of skating. They know what to work on. “Expressiveness, emotion, perhaps some levels that the judges didn’t give us. And especially on consistency, to perform consistent programs every day,” Filip Taschler emphasized.
The Taschlers and Daniel Mrazek and Katerina Mrazkova will have to significantly improve compared to January at the World Championships, if both duos are to qualify for the Olympics next year and the World Championship in Prague. But they don’t want to burden themselves with this in advance.
“We don’t really focus on this,” admitted Natalie Taschlerova. “We want to go to the World Championships looking forward to enjoying it. Maybe even our mom will come. We like America, the fans there are great.”
