Niina Petrokina set a new Estonian record with 208.18 points in the women’s singles at the European Figure Skating Championships in Tallinn, becoming the first Estonian figure skater to win the European title. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on ERR.

“I had thought about standing on the podium and hearing our anthem play, but I had so many emotions, I couldn’t even sing at first! That moment came so quickly, I didn’t truly get to enjoy it,” an emotional Petrokina told after the award ceremony.

“I did as I do in training – I tried to switch off my head and just do my job. The emotions came afterwards, but I didn’t have as much strength as usual; I tried to hold on to it until the end to avoid falling. At the end, I realized I was getting a medal but I didn’t yet know which one!” added the new European champion.

“It happened so fast — I woke up this morning and now here I am standing with a medal… it’s my dream,” said an overjoyed Petrokina. “I didn’t watch my competitors; I just walked in the corridor. I didn’t know how [Gubanova] had done. I realized I had scored a lot of points, but I didn’t even look at the total… I sat there and felt completely empty. Only now am I starting to understand what’s happening.”
