Sofia Samodelkina who represents Kazakhstan told about the decision to have a training camp with Rafael Arutyunyan. The interview was recorded before the internship. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“Of course, it was both on advice and just a suggestion to think: maybe you have some other options. I started looking at all the coaches, and I liked Rafael Vladimirovich the most (Arutyunyan). I have respected him since childhood; I remember when he came to CSKA when I was about 13. He came with Nathan Chen who was not very famous back then, but everyone was taking pictures with him. So, I’ve known him since childhood, as do my mom and dad. We have a very high opinion of him and respect him both as a coach and as a person; we know he is good.
He has coached Olympic champion Nathan Chen, world champion Ilia Malinin, and many other well-known figure skaters. And since I would like to restore my ultra-c elements — not just talking about ultra-c and jumps, but everything together — but as a main fact, I really want to restore them. I don’t know yet how it will be — it’s tough, I think. But I will restore them, therefore I decided.
Initially, it’s like a trial, then it’s a training camp. First, I go for 21 days, and then we will think, Rafael Vladimirovich will give his opinion. And everything will depend on that, on whether we will gather facts, whether we will go again. God willing, everything will be fine, and we will definitely go again. I think if it works out, we will go like on mini-camps,” Samodelkina said.
