Nobunari Oda (37), won Western Japan Championships with a total score of 228.12 points. This victory secures his first appearance in the Japanese Nationals (December 19-22, Osaka) in 11 years. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“I’m extremely happy. Since it will be held in my hometown, Osaka, I aim to perform even better than I did today.” His signature SP this season, “Matsuken Samba,” will be showcased at Nationals, and he expressed his excitement, “I hope to bring the fun vibe to the rink and make everyone smile watching figure skating.”

In contrast to his lively SP, his free skate was to the emotionally stirring “Angels”. In the free program he performed the solid content, landing all seven jumps including a quadruple toe loop.

On the same day, his eldest son participated in a Shorinji Kempo competition. They encouraged each other with “do your best” as they left home. His son won a silver medal and sent him a photo of it. With a gentle smile, Oda said, “He sent me a photo of his silver medal, so now that I have won a gold medal, I want to send him a photo of it right away.”
