Czech ice dance team Natalie Taschlerova and Filip Taschler spoke about changes in their trainings and new programs. Here’s a translation of their comments.
“We changed our fitness coach, who now takes care of our overall physical preparation. Previously, we had one person for the gym, another for flexibility, but now it’s one person who handles everything. With our coach, Matteo Zanni, we also changed the style and type of training on the ice. We have a new mental coach and psychologist, who are Czech, because it suits us better in our native language,” Taschler said.
They place greater emphasis on recovery and injury prevention. The sibling pair has already competed in two events this season (the interview was taken before Skate Canada – ed.). In September at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, the Taschlers finished fourth, and at the beginning of October in Astana, they won. “The competitions showed that the changes we made in preparation were good,” Taschler told.
Regarding the new dances, in the rhythm dance they strive to meet the trend of the International Skating Union, which wants to see high-tempo dances. “When we try it in training, it’s like a sprint from start to finish. It’s more challenging to focus on all the necessary details at that speed, but we’re all in the same situation, so we worked a lot on that now before the Grand Prix,” Taschler explained.
They said goodbye to last year’s free dance, which was a tribute to their late father. “That free dance was important to us and we like to reminisce about it, but honestly, I think that when we danced it for the last time at the World Championships in Montreal last year, we were glad that the crazy season was behind us,’ remarked Taschlerova.
This season, their free dance is choreographed to the music of Moby. This idea was proposed by coach Zanni. “He played us the song Porcelain, which eventually became our main piece. Both Natka and I were struck by its somewhat unconventional, almost meditative music,” Taschler shared. “It’s about dreaming, but the story is open because each of us dreams about something different. We leave it to everyone who watches it to find something for themselves.”
As for their goals for the season they revealed, “We would like to finally aim for the European podium this year, but of course, we know how strong and large our competition is. We will try to work even harder and see how it turns out.”
