In the an interview with Roman Kostomarov, Evgenia Medvedeva talks about the decision to end her competitive career and personal life. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“I got through that moment quite easily. People asked me: during your career, did you ever want to hang up your skates for good? Once in my career, I wanted to, and I did it. And it was very timely for me.

When the coronavirus started – I got very sick from it. That’s what prompted me to end my sports career because I had severe complications, my back hurt. And everything was indicating that it was enough, to calm down. And I thought – well, probably, yes. What else can I do? I can’t win anything more than what I hadn’t already won.

Maybe I would have continued to fight, but my body was already giving up. It’s not that I suffered immensely from it. I would have suffered more if I had stayed,” Medvedeva explained in an interview with Roman Kostomarov.

Evgenia Medvedeva also spoke about her personal life during her career.

“Everything was fine. And then, when I answered questions about my personal life, I always said I couldn’t, I didn’t have time, because I didn’t want to talk about it. Just so they would leave me alone.

Because in my mind, the image of a champion athlete, and messing around with boys at that time… Because I was winning, I was 17-18 years old, even 19. And I was constantly asked about my personal life, so I maintained this image that, you know, I was all about sports, just sports, and there was no one else, just leave me alone.

But in reality, I am a girl. I liked boys, I tried to date, to socialize, I was becoming a woman. After all, we are humans. I maintained the image of a champion and said what people probably wanted to hear. So, I dismissed it, but in reality, I had a wonderful childhood, a great adolescence, and experienced my first love, breakups — I had it all,” Medvedeva said.
