Alena Kostornaia and Georgi Kunitsa commented on the state of Alena’s health and rumors that the team plans to change their sports citizenship and represent Azerbaijan. Here’s a translation of their comments.
Alena Kostornaia has announced that she will not be competing for at least the next six months. Previously, Kostornaia posted on her Telegram channel photos from the hospital with an IV drip in her arm and told that they will miss a significant number of competitions this season because of the health problems.
“Yes, we need some time now because I need to recover — I’ve had severe pneumonia. I will have to miss a number of competitions until I am fully recovered, which will take no less than six months. We have a lot of work, I see that we have a huge number of shortcomings, a massive amount of things that require immediate attention, but that’s how it turned out,” said the skater.
The pair also reacted to the recent rumors shared by The Skating Lesson podcast that they were planning to switch to Azerbaijan.
“We are not going anywhere, we aren’t thinking about it, we are not planning it. First and foremost, we are athletes of the Russian Federation, and we will only skate for the Russian Federation. No matter how difficult or tough it gets, even if we are in fortieth place, then we will perform at fortieth place and rise from the bottom to the top. But we will never take the easy way out,” said Kostornaia.
“Alena and I really love Azerbaijan, but for now, our connection to it is only through pomegranate juice and the fact that we know Vova Litvintsev,” added Georgi Kunitsa.
