Annabelle Morozov and Jeffrey Chen, representing the USA, took second place at the Lombardia Trophy. The Russian Figure Skating Federation approved Morozov’s transfer to the USA in May this year. Ekaterina Bobrova, 2014 Olympic gold medalist in team event, commented on their performance.
“What do I think of Annabelle Morozov? Life has dragged the poor thing through, indeed. During the free dance, I realized that they look like juniors to me and not in the best sense of the word.
I don’t even want to go back to the rhythm dance because their costume was not ready; she took an old dress that was previously meant for a samba-rumba. The choice of music was very strange because it starts with something potentially modern and then abruptly shifts to the ’50s, as if it’s a time machine going backward, and it just doesn’t work. No, it didn’t impress me. I couldn’t unravel the mystery of that rhythm dance,” said Ekaterina Bobrova.
“A person sitting next to me, who is a Russian technical specialist in ice dance, asked “Oh, who are these?” – “Well, that’s Annabelle Morozov.” – “Who do they represent?” I said, “America.” And I was told that they just picked up a boy, whoever was available, sadly. That was the opinion when they saw the pair. I don’t know, maybe they haven’t skated their best yet. They are still young, but that potential we all saw when comparing her with Elena Ilinykh, with that magnificent skating and incredible danceability, is now gone,” added Bobrova.
