Rion Sumiyoshi started the 2024/2025 season by winning the Tokyo Summer Games. She scored a total of 198.65 points. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“I was able to perform the routine I wanted to show,” said Sumiyoshi after the short program where she successfully executed all her jumps, including a combination of triple flip – triple toe loops and triple lutz but placed second. Rion Sumiyoshi and Yuna Aoki had the same score in the short program, but Aoki had the higher technical score. She also said that she is determined to “show how much I have improved over this summer and aim for a comeback victory in the free program.”
In the free skate she scored 130.11, Sumiyoshi attempted quadruple toe loop but fell. “The program has developed to show the extension in each skating stride and the movements I want to highlight,” she commented on her performance. This season’s free Program, “Adiemus,” is themed around the growth of plants. “I want to express the joy of growing towards the sky after receiving nourishing rain.”
“My bad habit of overthinking showed up. I believe the program really comes together with successful jumps. I want to build more stamina,” she said commenting on having some underrotated jumps.
“Last year, I managed to do well in the Grand Prix series, but I was worn out by the Japanese Nationals. This season, I want to peak during that period.” Looking beyond, her target is to excel on the international stage in the latter half of the season. “Making it to the World Championships is my biggest goal.” she said.
