This year’s training camp for juniors was led by Daisuke Takahashi, he shared his experience and also shared his view on training. Here’s a translation of his comments.

When asked about his insistence on the finer points of skating techniques, Takahashi said with a smile: “I don’t think there are any compromises. However, athletes have a lot to do within the rules, so when it comes to prioritization, techniques that earn more points naturally become the top priority. But if they want to continue skating for a long time and aim to perform in ice shows in the future, having skating techniques will help them sustain in the long run. If they work hard on this while their bodies are still flexible (as juniors), it will make things easier for them later on.

I truly want the skaters who participated in this camp to continue skating for a long time, and I would be happy to see skaters emerge who can both jump and skate beautifully. If they practiced the next day keeping in mind what was said, that would be a pass for me since that shows awareness.”

From his experience, Takahashi remarked, “I think their regular coaches probably say the same things, but it’s possible that hearing it every day might lead to not truly listening. So, sometimes when a ‘stranger’ comes in and points something out, it can make them realize, ‘ah!’”
