On her show on Youtube, Evgenia Medvedeva spoke about the impact of negative comments on self-esteem and also shared how she feels about fans calling her a “goddess.” Here’s a translation of her comments.
“At 16-17 years old, when a girl is just forming her self-awareness and positioning herself as a girl in society – and for female athletes, this happens even later because we live in a sports bubble – people began to write about me: ‘She’s just hideous, it’s impossible to look at her! Look at her crooked legs! And her face looks mean! Is her hair falling out? Why is her hair so thin? Is she ill with something?’
And meanwhile, I stand in front of the mirror and realize that I have normal, thick Armenian hair. My legs, well, maybe because of the sport, my knees might look a bit inward, but not so crooked to say I’m hideous.
It’s shocking and sometimes even alienates you from yourself. Because you step away from the mirror thinking, ‘I won’t look again in case I actually find something, in case these people are right.’
In the media space, a lot of good things are exaggerated, but we don’t react that way to them; we look for the negative and cling to it,” Medvedeva said in a conversation on her YouTube show “Bez Kommentariev” (No Comments).
“People often shout from the stands: ‘Medvedeva, you’re a goddess!’ I’m pleased, but in such moments, I feel very awkward.
My fans even made a huge, long banner that starts with the hashtag ‘Medvedeva – goddess.’ They unfold it and constantly take photos against the backdrop of me skating.
But I’m not a goddess. I am Medvedeva – that’s true, but not a goddess, and I’m not planning to be one. Yet, it feels nice,” said the two-time world champion during.
