The news of the “hand-holding date” with Ando’s student has been first reported in “Shukan Bunshun” on June 27th. Ando had posted messages such as “I can’t trust anyone” on her Instagram and “You don’t know the truth” on her now-deleted Twitter. She appeared on the TV news program on the July 19th and apologized for reported “hand-holding dates” with her 16-year-old student. Here’s a translation of her comment.
“I would like to talk a little bit about what has been reported in weekly magazines recently. It’s a personal matter, but I would like to express it in my own words and take some time. As a responsible adult and a coach, my thoughtless and careless attitude has inconvenienced many people involved in skating, sponsors who have supported me through skating, the media, and most importantly my family and the skaters involved. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize sincerely. I’m truly sorry.
The reporters came to listen me carefully for their articles, and I want to avoid any misunderstandings caused by the photos or the titles in the articles that the public may have. Of course, there is no such relationship, and as a figure skater and a coach, I have been committed to skating with a strong spirit. As long as that is understood, I believe it will not cause any trouble for the skaters. I just want to clarify up front that part of the report is groundless, just as it was stated in the article. I am truly sorry for any confusion.
When asked, “Are you still teaching?” Ando responded, “I’ve been in contact with those involved, and the people at the rinks the rinks who have been taking care of me. I think it is very important to reflect on my actions, although there are many people who are waiting patiently for me to reconsider my future. But I haven’t been able to go to the rink yet.
Figure skating has been my life since I was a kid, and I want to cherish the connections I make through figure skating in the future. I want to prepare myself so that I can meet everyone on the ice again. My desire to raise athletes as a coach remains unchanged, and I hope to continue to do so.”
