Here’s a translation of Yuma Kagiyama’s comments about his performance at the 2024 World Championships and Ilia Malinin made in the interview posted on Nikkansports and Hochi.

“I’m so grateful for the support,” Yuma told after this free program. “The cheers after the fall were incredible. I was really saved by the audience.”

“The program is constructed on the premise that I land the jumps. I think I was able to get into the music, and perhaps the audience felt the music too,” he added.

Yuma Kagiyama also told that he pays a lot of attention to ensure every single movement of the program was perfect. He searched for photos of himself online and was always conscious of how he appeared. He aimed to look picture perfect from all angles. That was his ideal. “I can do more.” A plethora of images taught him that even slight changes in hand angles could make significant differences.

While limiting jumps due to his injury, he achieved a silver medal, the same as before the injury. While frustrated at his loss to Malinin, he also noted, “My skating life does not end here. I want to catch up solidly.”

In the press conference, Kagiyama summarized, “First of all, I think I managed to fully skate both in the short program and the freeskate till the end. I was satisfied with the scores as well. There are parts where I am content with the outcome.” However, acknowledging Ilia Malinin who won with a total score of 333.76, he said, “I have a strong sense of frustration. Despite my best efforts, I don’t think I could have reached the gold medal. But I would like to figure out a strategy and give it my all ahead of the next season and the Milan Olympics.”
