Here’s a translation of Loena Hendrickx’s comments made for Sporza.
“If I skate well and if I don’t win a medal, then that’s very unfortunate, but I will be satisfied,” said Loena about expectations for upcoming World Championships.
“My body feels a bit tired, but I’m really looking forward to it.” she admits after her last training session on Belgian ice.
Hendrickx became European champion in January and does not deny that this title has had a big impact. “I really wanted to peak for that European Championships, and the decompression afterward was enormous. Fortunately, I have done some shows to get back into the rhythm, and in the last few days, I have been feeling a lot better.”
“These are the final efforts, and peaking again will not be easy. I hope I can do it again. I have done my best. I have trained hard and given it my all. I hope my body can hold out one last time this season.”
“The free skate is ready, and I am standing there with a big smile,” says Hendrickx. “The artistic aspect, conveying the free skate, the interpretation: I find that incredibly enjoyable.”
“The mental aspect becomes more difficult as you get older. You start to doubt more, and that sometimes makes it a real challenge,” admits Hendricks. “If I can deliver two very good performances, then a medal is definitely possible, but a small mistake can happen quickly.”
“Will I be disappointed without a medal? If I have skated well and do not win a medal, then that is very unfortunate, but I will be satisfied.”
About her further plans she shared, “I want to go to the Olympics for the third time, and when I think about it, the end is quite scary.”
“I don’t see myself stopping. Who knows, there may be several more years ahead. It depends on how my body feels,” said Loena.
