Here’s a translation of Daisuke Takahashi’s comment about beauty care for Maquia megazine.
Last year, Takahashi retired for the second time as a competitive skater, and his keen sense of beauty has been catching attention since.
Traveling a lot both domestically and internationally while competing, Takahashi faced many restrictions. This made it hard to regularly visit nail or hair removal salons. “After I retired and found I had more free time, I wanted to try gel nails… I had a habit of biting my nails and started to quit. When I got it painted for the first time, the color on my fingers felt fresh. At first, I was looking at my fingertips all the time. It made me feel good. Now, I am really into it and it’s completely a hobby (laughing).”
While discussing his dedication to nail design, he comments, “Since I started doing nails in May of last year after I retired, I decided to go ‘flashy’ for summer. I tend to wear blackish clothes, so I like to choose colorful accessories. Although, it’s not so much about the nail color, I just don’t really like a matte texture. I seem to like patterned designs. Surprisingly, red and pink don’t suit my hands. I think it’s because my fingers are quite masculine.”
Takahashi, having retired, wanted to begin focusing on self-improvement tasks and discussed his skincare routine. “I started full-body hair removal shortly after I retired. Thankfully, this has helped a lot— I was prone to body acne, and it started to decrease. I take skin care pretty seriously. I want to age naturally and beautifully. I want to put efforts into maintaining that beauty as I age. I think it’s great when beauty practices like maintaining clear skin help build self-confidence. To be honest, my face doesn’t feel right when I’ve applied makeup. So, I focus on skincare and maintaining clear skin. I do wear perfume though. I’ve pretty much been using the same thing for a while now. I prefer women’s floral over men’s scents. Currently, I use ‘Promenade in the Gardens’ by Maison Margiela Replica.”
“I think it’s inevitable that we feel negative feelings of jealousy as humans. But turning these feelings into a driving force for self-improvement can be a good thing. I think it’s beautiful if someone can take action and realize that everything that happens, in the end, is a result of what they’ve chosen themselves.”
Takahashi concluded the interview with his thoughts, “With time, I am excited to discover aspects of myself that I didn’t know could exist. It is awesome to have companions who I can share these objectives and work towards them together.”
