Here’s a translation of Kamila Valieva’s comments about body changes and weight control.

Q: Last season, some attention was drawn to the fact that you grew, and your figure changed. How did the stage of adolescence go for you?

Kamila Valieva: I haven’t gone through it yet. Last year, it seemed to me, “Oh God, what happened?” But that was just preparation for this season. I’m still growing. I even grew a bit more since last season. The body changes, but it’s normal because everyone goes through this period.

Q: In your opinion, should a coach monitor a skater’s weight, or is it the athlete’s responsibility?

Kamila Valieva: They started weighing me regularly at eight years old, keeping an eye on every gram. Now, in our group, we have weighing every day. Of course, the coach should monitor the weight of the athletes, but gradually, it should become a personal matter for each skater.

Q: How do you find that balance and stay within reasonable limits?

Kamila Valieva: It’s essential for people around not to say that you gained 200 grams when you haven’t finished growing. You need to understand that every child is growing, and weight can fluctuate. For an athlete, it’s crucial to focus not only on the numbers on the scale but also on their reflection in the mirror.

Q: Many athletes, like Alexandra Soldatova and Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva, openly discuss the issue of eating disorders. Are you surprised by such stories?

Kamila Valieva: No, it doesn’t surprise me. To avoid such moments, coaches and parents should tell children about the importance of proper nutrition rather than prohibiting something.”
